Introducing BTClock: An Open-Source ePaper Display for Bitcoin Enthusiasts

About BTCLOCK

The BTClock is an open-source hardware and software project initiated by "Djuri," a Dutch Bitcoin community member. It displays Bitcoin-related information on ePaper displays (EPD).

The First Prototype of the BTClock

The idea originated during a DBS meet-up in April 2023 and quickly developed into a first prototype consisting of an ESP32, seven ePaper displays from AliExpress, and many cables. Soon after, a 3D case was designed to give it a sleeker appearance.

Since the circuit diagram is also open-source, a bitcoiner named "MadBo" shared a concept for a custom printed circuit board (PCB). Through intensive collaboration, this concept was developed into a usable and affordable design, enabling enthusiasts to assemble the BTClock themselves.

Functionality

The BTClock PCB rotates through five different screens by default:

  • Block height
  • Moscow Time (Number of sats per Dollar)
  • Price
  • Time
  • Halving countdown

An API allows you to display any information you want on the screens. The software provides a web interface for easy configuration, such as setting the duration of each screen or connecting to your own Bitcoin node.

In terms of hardware, there are five buttons and four LEDs. The PCB includes connections for expansion, allowing for additional devices (such as a speaker) and the possibility of linking multiple BTClocks together.

DIY Kit

The BTClock website offers various DIY kits, and the project's GitHub wiki provides a comprehensive step-by-step guide for assembly. There is also a Telegram group for questions and support for building and using the BTClock.
